What Inspires My Photos

Part 6

In my last post, I discussed my last three-picture story assignment. Three-picture story #2 was all about the element of fire, so three-picture story #3 is all air.

For this assignment, I decided to stick with taking portraits. I felt like it was easier to visualize each element as a person. Some of my classmates even described the last set of photos as looking like a deity of some sort. I was feeling confident about building a character, but I didn’t want to take only portraits. I like to have a bit more variety in my photo assignments so I have more options to sequence with. However, I quickly ran out of time to shoot and was only able to use the portraits. Another problem I encountered was that air is hard to photograph. Air isn’t exactly tangible. You can feel the air, but you can’t see it. You can’t just photograph something that is invisible. This was an obstacle that I had to overcome.

As I stated above, I planned to do portraits. However, I also planned to take photos of curtains flying in the wind, somebody taking in a breath of air, leaves flowing in the wind, etc. I’ll list some inspiration photos in a gallery below.

When going out to take my portraits, I was blessed with a very windy day. I had my model dress in a white outfit, and I wanted her makeup to have a white look to it as well. I also bought 2 yds. of tulle and that was my main photo prop. I first had my model stand above me and hold the tulle out behind her. I wanted nothing but the sky to be in the background. The wind was flowing through the tulle and it helped to illustrate our invisible element. Next, I had my model run in an open field with the tulle flowing behind them. I wanted to capture that movement since air is free and flowing.

I have my final photos in the gallery below:
