What Inspires My Photos

Part 4

In my last post, I discussed my two-photo story assignment and what I went through to get my final photos. It was a very personal assignment, but I got out of my comfort zone and made something I was proud of. For my next series of photos, I wanted to step away from the heavier themes I was used to. I was stuck brainstorming the idea for quite a long time. It wasn’t until the last moment that I discovered my topic. The topic that I chose was to photograph the elements. Since I had 4 three-picture story assignments, I thought that this idea was perfect. One element per assignment.

The first element I chose to photograph was Earth. I thought it would be the easiest to accomplish since the earth is all around us. I wanted to take photos of hands coming from the earth, moss growing over a dormant body, and beautiful landscapes. I have my inspiration pictures in the gallery below:

I was feeling pretty confident about getting these photos. I was planning on taking self-portraits since I couldn’t find a model in time, and my location was very close to me. However, this plan kinda turned on its head. The day that I went to go shoot, I was tired, overwhelmed, and I was getting multiple tornado watch notifications. I thought that my shoot was a bust. There was no way that I would be able to shoot in the park that day. I clocked out of work, a bit defeated, and made my way home. By the time I reached home, I realized that the weather was actually pretty mild. I also realized that it might be good for me to get out into nature to ground myself. Feeling a bit better, I changed into hiking clothes and set out for my location.

I was planning on shooting at Devou Park since it is filled with gorgeous landscapes and is heavily populated most days. When I got there, it was a windy ghost town. I enjoyed feeling like I had the park to myself. However, the wind made it so that I was unable to take self-portraits since my tripod could get blown over. I decided to focus solely on the flora that spread across the park. I took photos of things that just caught my eye. Piles of leaves, acorns, pine cones, and twisting tree branches. It was such a spiritual experience.

My final photos are in the gallery below:

The other potential images are in the gallery below:

Thank you for reading. In the next post, I will be discussing a series based around Fire.
